Dr Venkatachalam is in his forties. He is slim and keeps fit.
After his basic medical degree, MBBS from Madras university in 1984, he served in the Army medical corps. He was posted to two large referral hospitals. Later he acquired his post graduate qualifications (MS) from Delhi university, and DNB from the National board of examinations. He trained as a specialist registrar in the North west region of England and also in Liverpool and Scotland. He got his FRCS from the Royal college of surgeons of Glasgow and the MCh Orth from the university of Liverpool. He has worked with leading knee surgeons in England.
